The purpose of HPLC pumps is to maintain a constant flow of mobile phase through the HPLC regardless of the pressure caused by the flow resistance of the packed column. Most commercial HPLC pumps are based on a reciprocating piston design. HPLC pumps can be used to mix or blend the mobile phase as well as to deliver it to the system. Their function is to reduce separation time of large column packings and allow the use of smaller particle size packings.
